Advocating for Change and a Government That’s Listening
In November, I wrote about the conversations I had with the Honourable Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice and the Honourable Searle Turton, the Minister of Children and Family Services, and their Chiefs of Staff. Both Ministers asked me to follow up with them in writing to fully present my suggestions for change.
Right before the holidays, I got the best Christmas present an advocate could ask for; a letter from the Government of Alberta’s Justice Department, thanking me and acknowledging my work in supporting victims of domestic abuse and for the suggestions and feedback I presented to the government. I was also extended an invitation to meet with the department of Justice to discuss my insights and explore ways to keep advancing this work.
I am so grateful to the Ministers who gave me their time and listened both in person and took the time to read my suggestions, follow through as promised, and take my feedback into account. I am grateful the Government of Alberta is actively working on and open to changing the system that is failing too many victims of abuse. I am grateful to be included in this process and turn my own traumatizing experience into something positive for all of those unfortunately still coming behind me.
I am excited to see what changes will come as I keep advocating for and work with those in government to create a fair and just system. I will continue to be a voice, stand up for and do whatever I can to keep holding abusers to account.
